About the event
Join the Hoosier Herpetological Society for one of our most popular outdoor events—our annual 7 mile float trip (~5 hours) down the scenic Driftwood River! This peaceful and wildlife-rich section of river flows through a state wildlife preserve and part of the Camp Atterbury wilderness area. You’ll have the chance to see deer, wild turkey, great blue herons, ospreys, and even beavers!
As herpers, we’ll make a few fun stops along the way to look for snakes, turtles, and other wildlife. Notably, this stretch of river is one of the northernmost places where you can spot all three species of map turtles—common, false, and Ouachita! You may also see smooth and spiny softshell turtles, painted turtles, red-eared sliders, and banded water snakes.
