Description

A dome-shelled marsh turtle with a bright yellow throat and a permanent “smile.” Long-lived and slow-breeding, it wanders widely overland.

Similar Species

Spotted Turtle, which is smaller and spotted; box turtles, which are terrestrial with fully closing shells.

Diet

Crayfish, insects, snails, fish, and some vegetation.

Habitat

Marshes, wet prairies, and shallow, vegetated lakes and ponds.

Reproduction

Lays 6-15 eggs in early summer, often traveling far overland to reach nesting sites.
