Description

A small, plain dark turtle of shallow wetlands, with a double-hinged plastron that closes over both ends of the body. Easily overlooked.

Similar Species

Common Musk Turtle, which has a smaller single-hinged plastron and two light head stripes.

Diet

Aquatic insects, mollusks, crustaceans, carrion, and some vegetation.

Habitat

Shallow, slow or still waters - ponds, ditches, and wetlands with soft bottoms.

Reproduction

Lays 2-5 elongate eggs in early summer, sometimes in muskrat lodges or leaf litter.
