Description
A large river basker whose shell is scrawled with yellow, C-shaped “hieroglyphic” lines. In Indiana it holds on in a few southwestern rivers.

Similar Species
Red-eared Slider, which has a red mark behind the eye; map turtles, which have a keeled shell.
Diet
Largely herbivorous - aquatic plants and algae, plus some insects and mollusks.
Habitat
Larger rivers with current, rocky or vegetated bottoms, and basking logs.
Reproduction
Lays about 10-20 eggs in sandy banks in early summer.
