Aquatic; heavy body, black or dark brown, occasionally retaining faint traces of the juvenile pattern; belly cream with dark, paired lateral spots, black tail; triangular head, heat-sensing pits, elliptical pupils; juveniles display brown/cream pattern and yellow/green tail
